The higher (and older) slab hut is Cook’s hut, owned by two brothers (late 1800s or early 1900s). One of the brothers was speared in the leg after an altercation with local aboriginals and they tried to get him to town to get medical help but they only made it a few kms before he died. There is a cross for him carved in a big gum old tree that’s facing away from the road where he died. I grew up in one of the farms you passed and used to camp in the huts as a kid.

Just had a look at this as I was checking out Challawong today. Another good day ride is to start at Goomburra hall, up North Branch Rd, across into Pilton via Pidgeon Rd (the best bit), Pilton Valley Rd and then back to Goomburra via Saddletop Rd, Finlay Rd, Gilmore Rd, Upper Spring Ck Rd and Forest Springs/Goomburra Rd, School Gully Rd and N Branch Rd.
Cheers, Mick
