I rode up Old Grandchester Road from the west in September 2020, and it was fine. It was at the end of a long day and I found the climb quite easy (and I’m lazy).
You might have to walk the last few metres if you’re climbing from the east.
You’ll be fine.

I’m planning a bike tour through that way and was wondering if Old Grandchester Rd is actually rideable. Hopefully it has not deteriorated too much in the last 6 years. I think it’s a better option than dealing with the traffic on the main road over the range anyway – even if we have to get off and push a bit.
