I think the snake’s eye colour is associated with it being about to shed it’s skin. They are normally clear as you have noted. It was a cooler overcast day and the snake was trying to get as much warmth as possible on the track.

Lake Somerset and Somerset Dam are named after Henry Plantaginet Somerset, a 19th century Queensland politician. Quite an English-sounding name, don’t you think?
