As a child I lived in the railway house at Mt Samson 1948-1955. Dad was a fettler working on the railway line, Mum ran the Post Office out of the Mt Samson railway station. Happy memories. The old Samsonvale hall (much renovated by the Council) sits just where the railway goods’ shed used to be. The line ran at the back of the (now) hall; our railway house would have been right in the middle of that dead end part of Andrew Road. An old fig tree from the backyard still stands there.

I have often thought about what it must have been like before Samsonvale was resumed for the dam. Thank you for your interesting photos and commentary. Not long ago I came across a fascinating account from someone who grew up on a farm at Samsonvale. R M Winn wrote about his experience revisiting the area when the water level dropped in the 2000s. The story “The Memory Keepers – Park Ranger Ian Kent and me” is in the book by R M Winn “True Grit and Dry Wit”.
