The Conondale Great Walk map is a valuable resource for riding in this area. Not to follow the walk track but for the fire roads and management trails overlaid on an easy to read topographic layout.

Hi Phil

I use a GPS and followed a track.

I plotted the track using a lot of different methods:
1. I made an educated guess where one track was by spending ages looking at Google Earth and following ridge-lines. I was out by a couple of hunred metres in one spot, but we found the track easily enough on the bikes.
2. I have a copy of Qld Govt “Sun Map” digital map collection as was able to plot some of the course using this.
3. I’ve ridden some of it before and used some of my own GPS plots.
4. I spent ages searching other people’s rides on Garmin Connect, found a guy who had done a similar ride, and got some ideas from him. (That’s not always optimal as you can end up making the same mistakes they did).

Thanks for asking this as I’ve been thinking about doing an article on how to plan your own adventure. I’ll expound on some of these methods in that article.

Neil

Perfect weather and great company. The ‘usual’ high standard write up. Sorry about the rough road treatment on the van. We’ll think a bit more about the right vehicles to take next time. Now I’ve added another rack to mine it gives us more scope.
Thanks Neil
