I took the family to Gus Beutel Lookout on the weekend.
It’s a breathtaking spot on the edge of the Great Dividing Range between Hampton and Esk. On our way home from Toowoomba, we decided to take the scenic route rather than battle all the roadworks on the Warrego Highway.
I’ve ridden the bike up here a couple of times, and really enjoyed being able to share it with Liz and the kids.
We all gaped and took lots of photos.
Except Lilly, who showed us how to live “In the moment”.
What’s unusual is that even though the view is so huge – it’s eerily silent. It seems strange to have such an expansive outlook on the world, and at the same time to enjoy it in such peace.
The Gus Beutel lookout is named after my grandfather who was the first park ranger and a local farmer. He had a passion to preserve the beauty of the rainforest for future generations and our family meets there once a year for a family picnic in his honour.
My grandparents a.so operated a kiosk on the site until my grandmother cancelled the lease in the 1950’s
question to Shann my maternal grandmother was a Beutel who came from the lockyer valley area and I was wondering if you could give me some family history on Gus. There are Augustine and Gustav in the family tree. Thank you in anticipation
I certainly can. If you look up August Friedrich Beutel on www . FamilySearch. Org I’ve uploaded all of it
